Mixamo uses the same rig for all of its animations. The good news is that while there isn’t a single standard rig, there are some common ones. So an animation sequence only works on a very specific type of “rig”. Unfortunately, there is no single standard “rig” for humanoid characters. When an animation sequence runs, it tells each bone how to move and twist. The act of putting a common set of bones into a figure is called “rigging”. A collection of bones in a figure is called a “rig”. Each of the pyramid looking things is a “bone”. The picture above is an example from blender.

However, once a bone is stuck in a figure, animators can tell the software to “move” the bone, and the computer will figure out which part of the character to move with the bone and how to move it. These bones are invisible and are never displayed. Just like in a human body, animators put “bones” into their figures. The most common way to animate a 3D figure is to insert “bones” into it. If you already understanding the concept of “rigging” and how 3D animation works, you can skip this part. Don’t worry, the concept is fast and easy to explain. If you’ve never done any kind of 3D animation, I encourage you to read this section. This devblog will concentrate on animations that come with the starter projects and other animations in the Unreal store. I will show how to make it so that my Daz3D figure can use any animation that was built for the “Epic” Skeleton as well as any of the Mixamo animations. I will not be creating my own keyframes or using keymorph based animations - at least not today. I’ll be using bone rigs with previously created animations. Like skinning a cat, there’s more than 1 way to create animations in Unreal Engine. Now that I’ve done that, I’m now going to animate it. One of the first challenges I overcame was importing a Daz3D model into Unreal Engine. And I’ve mentioned before, I’m also using Daz3D to create characters. You can read here why I chose Unreal Engine to make my game.
